CUSTOM TOOLS FOR ENGINEERS AND SCIENTISTS

Clickbio’s core expertise is designing solutions to the problems that exist at the interface of biology and engineered automation systems. Our technical design team is composed of talented mechanical engineers and scientists with hands on bench experience. Because we understand the nature of laboratory operations, we’re uniquely positioned to design effective solutions. We accomplish this through an ideate-design-manufacture process. Here’s how that works.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM

When you engage with Clickbio, the first step is a conversation with our technical design team. Our immediate goal is to understand the core nature of the problem, and to determine the best path forward to a creation of a workable, cost-effective solution. Depending on the nature of the problem, we may request that both parties execute a mutual non-disclosure agreement. Open communication is key to effective process problem solving.

DESIGN, PROTOTYPING, AND ITERATION

Once our team has a full grasp of the problem, we’ll collaborate with you to create a list of design requirements and constraints. This is the document that will guide our engineering team as they design a tool perfectly crafted to solve your problem. We start by modeling the part in CAD software. Once we have your approval, we’ll proceed to prototyping in whichever material is most appropriate.  

We have the ability to create both functional and non-functional prototypes depending on need. Prototypes are generally produced by 3D printing because of cost and speed advantages, and are available in a variety of materials.

3D PRINTING

We have extensive experience with 3D printing. Sometimes 3D printing is fine for a final product but usually it's just the first step in our iterative design process.

Options for 3D printing include:

  • Soluble Support
  • Stainless Steel-filled
  • SLS Nylon
  • MJF Nyon

 

If you discover the need for modifications, we enter into a cycle of iterative design. This is the learn-revise-rinse-repeat process that allows us to make sure the tool we’re creating is perfectly fit to purpose.  

Following the iterative design and prototyping process, we will finalize the design and proceed to the manufacturing stage. We’ll apply whichever methods are most appropriate for the design. These are some of the materials and processes we have experience applying:

CNC MACHINING

  • Alumunum
  • PEEK
  • Polycarbonate
  • Stainless and Tool Steel
  • HDPE
  • Delrin

FINISHING

    • Polishing, tumbling, media blasting, or bead beating
    • Passivation and anodization
    • Assembly of testing of complex magnetic and electromechanical devices
    • E-Beam and gamma irradiation, EtO sterilization
    • Custom packaging
    • Inventory management and order fulfillment

    Once the tool is complete, the product engineer responsible for the design will confirm the tool meets the required specifications. We’ll either ship directly to you, or you can choose to have us manage your inventory and fulfillment logistics.  

LEAD TIMES

The timeline for development of custom tools varies depending on a number of factors. We understand that occasionally a last minute “I needed this yesterday” moment arises with tight timelines. We’ll do our absolute best to support your needs in these circumstances.
